ESL Teacher in Spain Reignites Passion for Writing through Respond

Alaina is an online English as a second language teacher who describes herself as having “fallen into teaching.” In university, she dedicated her time to studying Spanish and Journalism; yet post graduation, still hungry to deepen her Spanish speaking abilities, Alaina moved to Spain. In Spain, Alaina works as an early childhood educator, specializing in second language acquisition and teaching English as a Second Language to children . As a result of the global pandemic, many of her private teaching lessons were cancelled, leaving her seeking meaningful work through which to contribute to her community. This led her to Respond Crisis Translation.
Having resided in Spain for the last six years, Alaina has struggled watching how the already historically unjust treatment of migrants in the United States has only worsened since the election of Trump. Being so far away from the US has oftentimes led her to feel powerless, but her volunteer work with Respond has helped mitigate this feeling as she actively supports folks moving through complicated asylum processes to overcome language barriers. While her teaching and translating work is focused on English and Spanish, her experiences working with Respond have also motivated her to build her Portugese proficiency.
Her work with Respond is just one of many of Alaina’s passions. For the past four years Alaina has dedicated herself to reading literature predominantly written by women. One day she “noticed that 85% of her reading list for her master’s degree was work written by men. Isabel Allende was not even on the list. [Her] professor was arguing with [her] about why she should read Gabriel García Márquez and not Allende.” This and other similar conversations prompted her to read more work written by women and has led her to question whether male-identified authors can write fair and dynamic representations of women characters. She is deeply passionate about literature and language and describes herself as a “language learner.” When asked her favorite word in any language, Alaina responded with “albóndiga,” (“meatball” in English). She said, “When I moved to Spain, my kids would always ask me that question and I would always say ‘albóndiga’. But you have to say it with feeling.” Alaina embodies the notion of doing things with feeling in her everyday life, particularly through her work for Respond; she hopes to continue to use her language and writing skills for the benefit of all who face vulnerability compounded by language barriers.

Habiendo residido en España por los últimos seis años, a Alaina le ha costado ver como el trato ya históricamente injusto a los migrantes en los Estados Unidos solo ha empeorado desde la elección de Trump. Y estando tan lejos de los EE.UU. a menudo se ha sentido impotente, pero su trabajo voluntario con Respond la ha ayudado a mitigar ese sentimiento, ya que apoya activamente a las personas que atraviesan complicados procesos de asilo para superar las barreras del idioma. Mientras que su trabajo como maestra y traductora está basado en Inglés y Español, sus experiencias con Respond la han motivado a desarrollar su dominio del Portugués.
Su trabajo con Respond es solo una de las muchas pasiones de Alina; durante los últimos cuatro años ella se ha dedicado a leer literatura principalmente escrita por mujeres. Le apasiona profundamente la literatura y el lenguaje; y se describe a sí misma como una "estudiante de idiomas". Cuando se le preguntó su palabra favorita en cualquier idioma, Alaina respondió "albóndiga" ("meatball" en inglés). Ella dijo: "Cuando me mudé a España, mis hijos siempre me hacían esa pregunta y yo siempre decía "albóndiga". Pero tienes que decirlo con sentimiento”. Alaina encarna la noción de hacer las cosas con sentimiento en su vida cotidiana, particularmente a través de su trabajo para Respond; ella espera continuar usando sus habilidades de lenguaje y escritura para el beneficio de todos los que enfrentan una vulnerabilidad agravada por las barreras del idioma.
