At Respond: Crisis Translation, we work at the frontlines providing direct language access services to people experiencing crisis.
The trauma and injustice that we interact with daily as first line responders remind us that it is impossible to separate our urgent direct service work from the equally urgent work of dismantling language violence.
Language violence underpins systems across the U.S. and world. In response, our collective of language activists has decided to form Respond: Language Democracy Project.
The goals of Respond: Language Democracy Project are:

Support people directly impacted by language violence
Many of our individual clients have experienced financial, physical and emotional harm as a result of institutionalized language violence. We are committing to working with all directly impacted by language exclusion and violence to create platforms for insisting on justice and reparations.
Foster systems change
Through collaborative policy proposals, voter mobilization, and advocating for a culture that values and funds translation, we are working together to build the language democracy we envision.
