Aria is an Armenian-American from Los Angeles. She is a non-profit and administrative professional and an anthropology and human rights researcher. She studied Cultural Anthropology at USC and completed the Oxford University Consortium for Human Rights.
What do you do professionally/ what is your professional title (when you’re not volunteering with Respond)?
I am a non-profit and administrative professional as well as a cultural anthropology and human rights researcher. My professional experience includes positions held at the Berggruen Institute, the Natural History Museum of LA County, and the USC Institute of Armenian Studies.

How did you learn about Respond?
I learned about Respond from my friend Leila who is volunteer with the organization.
What motivates you to be a part of Respond?
Language justice and language access are very important issues to me. Being a refugee or asylum seeker is a very vulnerable state to be in. Not being able to advocate for oneself exacerbates the already precarious position refugees find themselves in. I am committed to doing my part in providing access and assistance to those in need.
How has volunteer work had an impact on your life?
Volunteer work has given me a special kind of personal fulfillment that can only be gained through helping others. Devoting one’s time, energy, and skills to a worthwhile cause is a rewarding use of one’s time and a wonderful way to connect with human beings of all walks of life.
Can you share a fun or little-known fact about yourself?
My most prized possession is a rock from my hometown of Ashtarak, Armenia. I have kept it with me throughout my entire life and carried it with me across the world in all my travels.
Favorite word in any language?
My favorite phrase in the Armenian language is Bari Looys (Բարի Լույս). Bari is a unique Armenian word that I love. It does not have an exact English translation. It means good but it also means kind, humane, and good-natured. Looys means light. It is the equivalent of the English “good morning.” I find it a very lovely way to greet one another at the start of each day.

Soy un profesional administrativo sin fines de lucro, así como una investigadora de antropología cultural y derechos humanos. Mi experiencia profesional incluye puestos ocupados en el Instituto Berggruen, el Museo de Historia Natural del Condado de Los Ángeles y el Instituto de Estudios Armenios de la USC.

¿Qué te motiva a ser parte de Respond Crisis Translation?
La justicia lingüistica y el acceso al idioma son temas muy importantes para mí. Ser refugiado o solicitante de asilo es un estado muy vulnerable. No poder defenderse a sí mismo exacerba la posición ya precaria en la que se encuentran los refugiados. Estoy comprometida en hacer mi parte para brindar acceso y asistencia a los necesitados.
¿Cómo ha impactado tu vida el trabajo de voluntariado?
El trabajo voluntario me ha dado un tipo especial de realización personal que solo se puede obtener ayudando a los demás. Dedicar el tiempo, la energía y las habilidades a una causa que valga la pena es un uso gratificante de mi tiempo y una manera maravillosa de conectarse con otros seres humanos de todos los ámbitos de la vida.
¿Nos cuentas un dato curioso sobre ti?
Mi posesión más preciada es una roca de mi ciudad natal de Ashtarak, Armenia. Lo he guardado conmigo durante toda mi vida y lo he llevado conmigo por todo el mundo en todos mis viajes.
¿Cúal es tu palabra favorita en cualquier idioma?
Mi frase favorita en el idioma armenio es Bari Looys (Բարի Լույս). Bari es una palabra armenia única que me encanta. No tiene una traducción exacta al inglés.
