Lea Gabay
ESL Teacher and English<>French Translator
Lea is an English as a Second Language Teacher in San Francisco who was born and raised in France. She has been teaching for twelve years; six of these years were spent teaching abroad in Vietnam, West Africa, Senegal, Spain, Germany, France, while the remaining six have been in the United States. While she valued learning from the unique culture and history present in each country she has settled in, she particularly treasures the strong sense of community and hospitality she experienced in Senegal.
Being a part of a community and upholding her values is of primary importance to Lea. Lea’s motivation to volunteer stems from her religious upbringing as one value in Judaism is to give back to the world and to be of service. For this reason, she ties volunteering to her Jewish identity and seeks to help repair the world in any way she can.
Heartbroken by immigration issues occurring at the U.S.-Mexican border, Lea decided to get involved with translating after she found a post about volunteering with Respond in a Facebook group. Although fluent in French, German, and Spanish, she mainly translates from English to French and occasionally completes Spanish translation requests. Lea says her favorite word in any language is the word “care” in English and she finds it peculiar that there is no equivalent word in French. She also really appreciates the words for “peace” in Spanish and “freedom” in French.
Fun fact: Lea also takes pride in the fact that her whole family is left-handed.

Lea es una profesora de inglés como segundo idioma en San Francisco que nació y se crió en Francia. Lleva doce años siendo maestra; seis de estos años los pasó enseñando en el extranjero en Vietnam, África Occidental, Senegal, España, Alemania, Francia, mientras que los otros seis ha estado en los Estados Unidos. Si bien valoraba aprender de la cultura y la historia únicas presentes en cada país en el que ha vivido, atesora particularmente el fuerte sentido de comunidad y hospitalidad que experimentó en Senegal.
Ser parte de una comunidad y defender sus valores es de suma importancia para Lea. La motivación de Lea para ser voluntaria proviene de su educación religiosa, ya que un valor en el judaísmo es retribuir al mundo y ser útil. Por esta razón, vincula el voluntariado con su identidad judía y busca ayudar a reparar el mundo de cualquier manera que pueda.
Con el corazón roto por los problemas de inmigración que ocurren en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, Lea decidió involucrarse en la traducción después de encontrar una publicación sobre el voluntariado con Respond en un grupo de Facebook. Aunque domina el francés, el alemán y el español, traduce principalmente del inglés al francés y ocasionalmente completa solicitudes de traducción al español. Lea dice que su palabra favorita en cualquier idioma es la palabra "cuidado" en inglés y le resulta peculiar que no exista una palabra equivalente en francés. También aprecia mucho las palabras "paz" en español y "libertad" en francés.
Un fun fact: Lea también se enorgullece del hecho de que toda su familia es zurda.
