Promoting Tenants’ Rights Amidst COVID-19: Partnering with Bay Area Rent Strike

COVID-19 provided new challenges to those already struggling to pay exorbitant rent prices in the Bay Area. In response to the sudden loss of jobs, Bay Area Rent Strike helped organize and inform on how to organize a refusal to pay rent, at least until proper legislative protection could be put in place.

It is impossible to walk through the streets of San Francisco or Oakland without hearing multiple languages. The linguistic diversity of the area is part of its beauty. However, this diversity also posed a unique difficulty to the Bay Area Rent Strike while attempting to organize tenants from across the Bay: how to communicate and unite across languages?

The Bay Area Rent Strike reached out to Respond Crisis Translation for support translating resources into Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Tagalog that could be circulated throughout the area. The Bay Area Rent Strike had compiled massive amounts of information with the goal of supporting as many people as possible, and over 15 translators contributed their expertise and talent to this important project.

Thanks to our amazing translators for this massive effort, the Project Managers who brought everyone together, and to the Bay Area Rent Strike team for this important initiative to support all peoples experiencing heightened vulnerability amidst COVID19.
