Undergraduate Internship and Leadership Program

A rising junior at Catholic University, Gemma del Carmen brought an immense amount of energy and passion to the Respond Crisis Translation team this summer. She spearheaded social media strategy across platforms to raise awareness about Respond´s work and services. She also worked as a Project Manager on several critical translation projects and collaborated with the team on grant applications so that Respond can continue to bring its services to more people and partners who need them. At Catholic University, Gemma serves as the Student Body Vice President. Her platform centers on increasing justice, diversity, and inclusion for the student community. She plans to pursue a career in immigration law.

How did you get involved with Respond? 

A friend of mine sent me the internship opportunity because she thought it would be something that I would enjoy; she was absolutely right. I applied for the internship and went through the interview process. After talking with Ariel (founder) and Fê (Portuguese team lead), I became more infatuated with the essential work that Respond does and knew I had to help somehow. When I was accepted into the Internship program I knew that my summer internship would be unforgettable, and it has been exactly that.

What would you say to other college students considering getting involved with Respond? 

To other college students considering working for Respond, I would say it is a once in a lifetime experience. I gained invaluable experience for my future and was able to feel like I made a tangible difference for a non-profit whose mission I truly believe in. I never did clerical work for Respond like many internships ask you to do; I learned how the grant and fellowship process functioned, wrote about incredible members of the team as the writer of our Volunteer Spotlights, met with leaders and founders of our partners, ran all the Respond Crisis Translation social media accounts, and project managed alongside volunteer translators. These experiences are ones that are difficult to find in any other internship; I feel fortunate to have been given this opportunity and would recommend this internship to any dedicated student who is passionate about language justice.

What was the most gratifying part of your internship experience? 

The most gratifying part of my internship with Respond has been making a tangible effect on an organization that has such a profound impact on the migrant community. I grew exponentially in my knowledge of social media and analytics, as well as my knowledge of fundraising for grassroots organizations. My favorite project that I worked on was interviewing volunteers and writing spotlights on them; their stories are compelling and inspiring and they were so gracious in sharing their time with me.

How do you think your internship with Respond will further your career path? 

I am interested in a career in immigration law. Further, I believe my internship with Respond provided me with a necessary understanding of how language barriers can affect immigration cases. This knowledge will allow me to be a more compassionate and understanding lawyer with a scope of the importance of language democracy in the court of law. 

How has your passion for language justice changed/grown over this internship? 

When I started with Respond, I had a very basic understanding of the lack of language access across the world. Post internship, my comprehension of the enormity of language need on a global scale has grown exponentially. I am now better able to understand how English-biased the US immigration system is and how much more difficult this makes the process for migrants. I have learned how colossal the need is for language translation and interpretation. From a skills perspective, I grew in my time management, multitasking, and organizational skills, as well as learned how to represent the brand of an organization through social media channels.

What was the most important thing you learned about yourself?

I learned a lot about myself from this internship, but most importantly, I learned that my passion is the driving force for my work ethic. This insight has led me to understand that whatever career path I choose, I must work for a cause that impassions me in order to feel fulfilled.

Gemma del Carmen es una estudiante de tercer año de la Universidad Católica . Este verano, Gemma aportó una increíble cantidad de energía y pasión al equipo de traducción de Respond Crisis. Encabezó una estrategia a través de las redes sociales para dar a conocer el trabajo y los servicios de Respond. También trabajó como gestora de proyectos en varios encargos cruciales de traducción y colaboró con el equipo en las solicitudes de subvención para que Respond pudiera seguir ofreciendo sus servicios a más personas y socios que los necesitan. Gemma es la vicepresidenta del cuerpo estudiantil en la Universidad Católica. Su objetivo se centra en promover la justicia, la diversidad y la inclusión de la comunidad estudiantil. Tiene previsto hacer una carrera en derecho migratorio.

¿Cómo te involucraste en Respond Crisis Translation?

Una amiga mía me envió la oferta de esta pasantía porque pensó que sería algo que me gustaría y tenía toda la razón. Solicité la pasantía y pasé por el proceso de entrevistas. Después de hablar con Ariel, la fundadora, y Fê, líder del equipo portugués, me enamoré más del trabajo tan esencial que hace Respond y supe que tenía que ayudar de alguna manera. Cuando me aceptaron en el programa, supe que mi pasantía de verano sería inolvidable, y así ha sido.

¿Qué les dirías a otros estudiantes universitarios que estén considerando participar en Respond?

A otros estudiantes universitarios que estén planteándose si trabajar para Respond, les diría que es una experiencia única en la vida. Gané una experiencia muy valiosa para mi futuro y pude sentir que marcaba una diferencia tangible para una organización sin fines de lucro, en cuya misión creo firmemente. No realicé trabajos administrativos para Respond como te piden en muchas pasantías, sino que aprendí cómo funcionaba el proceso de subvenciones y prácticas, escribí sobre miembros increíbles del equipo como redactora de los voluntarios más destacables, me reuní con líderes y fundadores de nuestros socios, gestioné todas las redes sociales de Respond Crisis Translation y gestioné proyectos junto a los traductores voluntarios. Estas experiencias son difíciles de encontrar en otras pasantías. Me siento muy afortunada de haber tenido esta oportunidad y recomendaría esta pasantía a cualquier estudiante que sea dedicado y apasionado por la justicia lingüística.

¿Cuál fue la parte más gratificante de tu experiencia de pasantía?

La parte más gratificante de mi pasantía en Respond ha sido lograr un efecto tangible en una organización que tiene un impacto tan profundo en la comunidad de migrantes. Mi conocimiento de las redes sociales y la analítica ha aumentado notablemente, así como mi conocimiento de la recaudación de fondos para los organizadores de base. Mi proyecto favorito en el que trabajé fue entrevistar a los voluntarios y escribir sobre ellos. Sus historias son convincentes e inspiradoras y fueron muy amables al compartir su tiempo conmigo.

¿Cómo crees que tu pasantía con Respond te ayudara a avanzar en tu carrera?

Tengo interés en hacer una carrera sobre el derecho migratorio. Considero que mi pasantía en Respond me ha proporcionado una comprensión necesaria de cómo las barreras lingüísticas pueden afectar a los casos de migración. Este conocimiento me permitirá ser una abogada más compasiva y comprensiva con una visión de la importancia de la democracia lingüística en los tribunales.

¿Cómo ha cambiado/crecido tu pasión por la justicia lingüística durante esta pasantía?

Cuando empecé a trabajar en Respond, tenía una idea muy básica de la barrera lingüística que está presente en todo el mundo. Después de la pasantía, mi comprensión de la enorme necesidad de idiomas a escala mundial es ahora mayor. Ahora entiendo mejor el sesgo del sistema de inmigración de Estados Unidos hacia el inglés y lo mucho que esto dificulta el proceso para los inmigrantes. He aprendido lo colosal que es la necesidad de traducción e interpretación de idiomas. Desde el punto de vista de las aptitudes, he aumentado mi capacidad de gestión del tiempo, de realizar varias tareas a la vez y de organización, y he aprendido a representar la marca de una organización a través de las redes sociales.

¿Qué fue lo más importante que aprendiste sobre ti?

He aprendido mucho sobre mí gracias a esta pasantía, pero lo más importante es que aprendí que mi pasión es la fuerza motriz de mi ética de trabajo. Esta idea me ha hecho comprender que, sea cual sea la carrera que elija, debo trabajar por una causa que me apasione para sentirme realizada.
