Dudu Koné is a French, Wolof, and English translator who has led on dozens of important asylum cases for Respond Crisis Translation. He is a language activist and leader in his community where he serves as an English teacher to hundreds of students in Senegal.

What do you do professionally/ what is your professional title (when you’re not volunteering with Respond)?

Professionally, I am a teacher of English here in my country (Senegal, West Africa)

What language(s) do you translate?

I can translate into French- English- Wolof.

How did you learn about Respond?

I got the information about Respond from a whatsapp group member who is an American working with the teachers' association. She shared the link and I sent an email.

What motivates you to be a part of Respond?

My first motivation is the love that I have for the English language. Then I always dreamed about flying to America for work, not for just tourism. I also want to improve myself in communication, translation and be an activist on human rights and a future leader because I am a dynamic person and a hardworker who needs more opportunities to make a living for supporting my family who live from my little income.

How has volunteer work had an impact on your life?

The short time of volunteering that I had with Respond has made me more aware of the awesome job you do and that you need support to achieve more. I always sacrifice my time and energy for others, I wanted to take other challenges and have another expérience of translation which i used to do at University of Dakar in the English department, and contribute to your work and prepare myself for the future.

Can you share a fun or little-known fact about yourself?

I remember one day, in 2009, when I was at the university studying, i finished class and did not have money to pay the bus for home. I had been walking for about an hour and finally met two Nigerian ladies who spoke only English and lost direction. They asked me the way and when answered them, they looked at each other smiling and the one said: “At last, we have somebody who understands English”. I took them to where they wanted to go and on the way they asked again: “How do you manage to speak English in a French speaking country?” My answer was: “I study English at the University, and i loved this language at grade 1.”

So when we arrived, they gave me 5000 CFA (which could pay my transport for 2 weeks). I was so happy and said to myself: " I got this because I speak English. Maybe it's a sign that I will get paid tomorrow because of English. Today i am a teacher of English and a coordinator of English clubs, and chairman of teachers' association. Hallelujah.

Profesionalmente, soy maestro de Inglés aquí en mi país (Senegal, África Occidental)

¿Cómo te enteraste de Respond?

Me enteré de Respond por un miembro del grupo de whatsapp que es una estadounidense que trabaja con la asociación de maestros. Ella compartió el enlace y envié un correo electrónico.

¿Qué te motiva a ser parte de Respond Crisis Translation?

Mi primera motivación es el amor que tengo por el idioma inglés. Después siempre soñé con volar a Estados Unidos por trabajo, no solo por turismo. También quiero mejorar mi comunicación, traducción y ser una activista de los derechos humanos y una futuro líder porque soy una persona dinámica y trabajadora que necesita más oportunidades para ganarme la vida para mantener a mi familia que vive de mis escasos ingresos.

¿Cómo ha impactado tu vida el trabajo de voluntariado?

El poco tiempo de voluntariado que he tenido con Respond me ha hecho consciente del increíble trabajo que hacen y de que se necesita más apoyo para lograr más. Siempre sacrifico mi tiempo y energía por los demás; quería asumir otros desafíos y tener otra experiencia de traducción a parte de la que solía hacer en la Universidad de Dakar en el departamento de inglés, y contribuir al trabajo que hace Respond y prepararme para el futuro.

¿Nos cuentas un dato curioso sobre ti?

Recuerdo que un día en 2009 cuando estaba estudiando en la universidad, terminé las clases y no tenía dinero para pagar el autobús a casa. Había estado caminando durante aproximadamente una hora y finalmente conocí a dos damas nigerianas que solo hablaban inglés y perdieron el rumbo. Me preguntaron el camino y cuando les respondí, se miraron sonriendo y una dijo: "Por fin tenemos alguien que entiende inglés". Las llevé a donde querían ir y en el camino me preguntaron: "¿Cómo sabes hablar inglés en un país de habla francesa?", y mi respuesta fue: "Estudio inglés en la Universidad y me encantó el idioma desde el primer grado.”

Entonces cuando llegamos al lugar donde querían ir me dieron 5000 CFA*; con los cuales podría pagar mi transporte durante 2 semanas. Estaba tan feliz y me dije: "Lo recibí porque hablo inglés. Tal vez sea una señal de que me pagarán mañana por hablar Inglés. Hoy soy profesor de inglés y coordinador de clubes de inglés y presidente de la asociación de profesores Hallelujah.
