Growing up in Washington D.C., I was lucky to get to know people from lots of different cultures and backgrounds, and to develop an appreciation for the great big world we share. I ended up getting a Ph.D. in Latin American literature in Austin, Texas, and later teaching Latin American studies and women’s studies in Gainesville, Florida. I got involved in human rights work and was a Mexico Country Specialist for Amnesty International. I recently retired from Environmental Health Coalition, a social and environmental justice non-profit in the San Diego/Tijuana region.
What do you do professionally / what is your professional title (when you’re not working as a volunteer for Respond Crisis Translation!)?
Rockford Coordinator, Northern Illinois Justice For Our Neighbors. JFON is a national non-profit that provides free legal services to low-income immigrants.
What motivates you to be part of Respond Crisis Translation?
I've worked with immigrant communities for a lot of my life and I feel especially compelled in the current environment to stand up for immigrant justice. I’m deeply grateful to Respond for the opportunity to contribute in the current dire situation.
Language democracy and language justice are core values for Respond Crisis Translation. How would you define “language justice” in your own words?
Language justice seats everyone at the table. An important practice when I worked at Environmental Health Coalition was ensuring that every person at every community gathering, staff meeting, city council hearing and so on, had translation and interpretation if needed. I like the slogan from Highlander Center – a take on Antonio Machado’s “Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar” – “We make the road by talking.” And listening.
Fun or little-known fact about you?
In my little art studio in a hundred-year-old building with creaky floors and transoms over the doors, I make artwork from vintage Electrolux vacuum cleaners.
Is there anything else about you that you would like to share?
I want to say that the Respond Team is amazing. Cool heads in crazy times.

Al crecer en Washington D.C., tuve la suerte de conocer a personas de diferentes culturas y orígenes; y desarrollar una apreciación por el gran mundo que compartimos. Tengo un Ph.D. en Literatura Latinoamericana de Austin, Texas, y luego he impartido Estudios Latinoamericanos y de Mujeres en Gainesville, Florida. Me involucré en el trabajo de derechos humanos y fui especialista en México para Amnistía Internacional. Coordinadora de Rockford, Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos (Justice For Our Neighbors, JFON) en el Norte de Illinois. JFON es una organización nacional sin fines de lucro que brinda servicios legales gratuitos a inmigrantes de bajos ingresos.
¿Qué te motiva a ser parte de Respond Crisis Translation?
He trabajado con comunidades de inmigrantes durante gran parte de mi vida y me siento especialmente obligada con la situación actual a luchar por la justicia para los inmigrantes. Estoy profundamente agradecida por la oportunidad que ofrece Respond de contribuir en la grave situación que tenemos actualmente.
La democracia lingüística y la justicia lingüística son los valores principales de Respond Crisis Translation. ¿Cómo definirías en tus propias palabras la “justicia lingüística”?
La justicia lingüística sienta a todos en una misma mesa. Una práctica importante cuando trabajé en Environmental Health Coalition fue asegurar que en cada reunión comunitaria, reunión de personal, audiencia del consejo municipal, etc., cada persona tuviera traducción y/o interpretación si fuera necesario. Me gusta el eslogan del Centro Highlander - una versión de "Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar" de Antonio Machado - "Hacemos el camino hablando" y escuchando.
¿Nos cuentas un dato curioso sobre ti?
En mi pequeño taller de arte, que está en un edificio de más de cien años con pisos chirriantes y travesaños sobre las puertas, hago obras de arte con aspiradoras Electrolux vintage.
¿Hay algo más de ti que quisieras compartir?
Quiero decir que el equipo de Respond es increíble. Cabezas geniales en tiempos locos.
